Elastic properties of planetary materials

Session Description:
Understanding elasticity of materials at extreme conditions is essential for modeling the internal structure of planets and translating variations in seismic velocities laterally and with depth to the composition and dynamics of the deep Earth. Constraints on the major element abundances, oxidation state, deep volatile budget, and light element content of planetary mantles and cores require precise knowledge of elasticity of planetary materials at high-pressures and temperatures. In order to construct a self-consistent database for the broader geophysics community, it is important to compare and validate elasticity results from experimental methods including ultrasonic interferometry, Brillouin spectroscopy, impulsive stimulated light scattering and nuclear resonant inelastic scattering and computational methods including density functional theory. This multi-disciplinary session invites contributions from experimental, theoretical and observational studies that contribute towards building models of the interiors and Earth and other planetary bodies.
