PP13A:
Development and Application of Coral Proxies for Ocean Change II Posters
Submit an Abstract to this Session
Session ID#: 25277
Session Description:
Corals open an exceptional window into ocean climate and biogeochemical change, from its deepest interior to its sunlit surface, on timescales ranging from the Paleozoic to the present. Coral skeletons grow in rhythmic structural patterns and can be accurately dated using radiometric methods, providing unmatched temporal resolution and chronometric constraint. Traditional isotope and element:calcium coral-based proxies have been widely applied to reconstruct ocean temperature, salinity and circulation. Now, creative new approaches are mining the organic and inorganic components of corals and gorgonians for novel information about the inner workings of the global oceans. In parallel, an improved understanding of the processes governing biomineralization, as well as the application of proxy system models, are bringing new perspectives to coral proxies. This session welcomes submissions from field, laboratory, theoretical and modeling studies that develop and apply both traditional and novel coral-based proxies to enhance understanding of ocean change on all timescales.
