Session Description:
The influx of massive digital data sets and the inherent three-dimensionality of Earth properties lends itself to a new way of visualizing, accessing, and quantifying Earth processes. A growing number of data tools and resources such as open source software, web interfaces, and mobile apps can now provide convenient access to geophysical data, thus facilitating scientific discovery and democratizing the availability of big data. Many data tools and resources offer seamless data access, integration, manipulation, and visualization that allow users to focus upon the science instead of data formats. In this eLightning session, developers and power-users of these geophysical tools and resources will present their products and provide hands-on demonstrations. Examples of use in research, teaching, and by the broader general-public will be shown with the goal of better understanding Earth dynamics, including surface processes, seismic hazards, plate tectonics, slab deformation, and the structure of the mantle and core.
