Multifault, Multisegment Ruptures in Complex Tectonic Regimes I Posters

Session Description:
The Mw7.8 2016 Kaikoura earthquake in New Zealand joins a suite of recent large earthquakes in which the complexity of rupture has been revealed by multiple datasets, including geodesy, seismology, and earthquake geology. These earthquakes challenge conventional assumptions about the degree to which earthquake ruptures are controlled by fault segmentation. The Kaikoura event was also notable for its widespread triggering of slow slip, involvement of the plate interface, tsunami generation and extensive landscape impacts. One year on from the earthquake, various datasets, and their integration, have much to offer in terms of understanding large earthquakes in regions of complex tectonics and how multi-fault ruptures are considered in seismic hazard assessment. In this session, we invite contributions covering all aspects of multi-fault ruptures including but not limited to studies of clustering and triggering, source processes, fault surface rupture and landscape impact, post-seismic deformation, and statistical characterization of associated sequences.
