IN21B:
Approaches for Curation to Data Discovery in the Era of Big Data Variety I Posters

Submit an Abstract to this Session

Session ID#: 25719

Session Description:
Data are critical to our understanding of Earth as a system. As Earth science data continue to grow in volume and variety, discoverability is becoming both more important and more challenging. Solving the discoverability problem begins with an “inside-out” approach: curating metadata to ensure completeness, correctness and consistency with a view toward helping the user discovery interfaces. The solution space also includes “outside-in” approaches, in which alternative pathways are used to enable discoverability. This session will look at both inside-out and outside-in ways to improve discovery. Inside-out ways include metadata curation tools, controlled vocabularies and ontologies, and collaborative metadata creation. Outside-in ways may include paths that start with the physical phenomena in question; from science research articles about the data; from narratives featuring the data; from data visualizations; and even from social media.
