Session Description:
Floods and droughts (and accompanying heat waves) are increasing rapidly, putting great stress on the resources and infrastructures in a changing environment. Such hydrological extremes are linked to multi-scale processes, e.g., global climate modes like ENSO, regional anomalies in atmospheric circulations and land surface conditions. Anthropogenic climate change and increasing exposure due to population growth and urbanization raise the risk of hydrological extremes significantly. Moreover, human water use brings a new dimension to the risk analysis, resulting in a grand challenge for the detection and attribution of the changing risk of hydrological extremes. Recent advances in remote sensing, climate-hydrology coupled modeling with human water use, and data assimilation, provide an unprecedented opportunity to tackle the grand challenge from a multidisciplinary perspective. This session welcomes contributions that address observations, mechanisms, modeling, prediction and projection of hydrological extremes and their risk, especially those linked to climate-hydrology-human interactions.
