Anthropogenic Impacts on Nutrient Cycling in Freshwater Ecosystems

Session Description:
Freshwater systems play an important role in global biogeochemical cycling as conduits and modulators of nutrients. Human perturbation of nutrient cycles has led to significant changes in freshwater ecosystems from the micro- to macro-scale. Pollution of waterways, damming of rivers, atmospheric deposition and anthropogenic climate change alter freshwater nutrient cycling, with implications for ecosystem functioning from the poles to the equator. This session will focus on how nutrient cycles are responding to anthropogenic perturbations, the mitigation thereof, and how we can employ modern technologies to understand linkages between nutrient cycles within and across systems. We encourage contributions focusing on nutrient cycling responses and feedbacks at any or across scales, including modelling, lab and field studies, particularly those that employ modern analytical techniques. This multidisciplinary session brings together scientists with interests spanning microbiology, biogeochemistry, glaciology, hydrology and limnology to debate the current state of knowledge, recent advances and to share ideas
