Tectonic applications of paleomagnetic, magnetic fabric and rock magnetic techniques

Session Description:
Magnetic techniques are key tools that may be used to address tectonic and geodynamic problems across a wide spectrum of scales. Paleomagnetic remanences provide unique geodynamic constraints that may be used to determine past plate motions and configurations, characterize tectonic systems at the regional-scale, or examine deformation associated with individual structures at the local-scale. Rock magnetic characterization provides insights into remanence acquisition during the formation and tectonic evolution of rock units, with, for example, recent advances in magnetic imaging allowing remagnetization processes to be explored at the grain-scale. Magnetic fabric analyses are now routinely employed in the quantification of petrofabric development at the micro- to macro-scales, complementing information obtained from other fabric techniques such as EBSD. This session therefore invites contributions from all areas where magnetic methods have been applied recently to tectonic problems, and particularly welcomes studies involving methodological advances or innovative applications of these techniques.
