Global change science for resource management: dimensions of co-production in landscape conservation

Session Description:
Climate services supporting landscape-scale adaptation and conservation planning are most useful (and therefore successful) when they result from co-production. However, true co-production requires stakeholder participation in reserach design, development, and implementation, and requires both time (for iterative development to maximize utility) and resources (personnel time and project funding) dedicated to the effort. Circumstances and resource limitation often result instead in a collaborative process in which needed products (for example, downscaled climate projections, or derived products such as projected hydrologic conditions, habitat availability or species distributions) are appropriated from other work. This process, in which academically-driven science is repurposed in collaboration with mangers to make it more applicable, can provide needed information on short timescales and incorporate the work of scientists who are not incentivized to work in a full co-production setting. We invite contributions illustrating successes, tradeoffs, and uncertainties along a spectrum of co-production for resource management under global change.
