North Atlantic Climate Variability: Mechanisms, Predictability and Impacts

Session Description:
Climate variability in the North Atlantic has important implications for rainfall, air temperature, hurricanes, and sea ice. However, the mechanisms that cause this variability remain an active area of research. In addition, observations over the last century are affected by anthropogenic influence, therefore it is important to separate the effect of external forcing from internal variations. In this session, we welcome observational and modeling studies addressing the mechanisms, predictability, and impacts of North Atlantic variability in the past, current and future climate. Contributions on the following topics are encouraged:

1. Low-frequency variability in ocean heat transport and atmospheric variability

2. The role of atmosphere-ocean-sea ice coupling in North Atlantic climate variability

3. Assessing the climatic impacts of North Atlantic variability on sea ice, hurricanes, precipitation etc

4. Understanding North Atlantic climate change from paleoclimate reconstructions

5. Response of North Atlantic variability to future climate change
