Linking Mantle Dynamics to the Geological Record

Session Description:
Many geological processes that sculpt the Earth's surface are driven by mantle convection. Temporal and spatial fluctuations of this flow induce complex patterns of dynamic topography and plate motion. These transient phenomena leave a significant legacy within the geological record. Vertical motions influence erosion, drainage reorganization, depocenter locations and stratal architecture of basins. They also exert long-term controls on magmatism, oceanic circulation, weather patterns and ice sheet stability. Therefore, the geological record holds the key to improving our understanding of mantle dynamics. Great care is necessary to successfully extract mantle signals from other local processes. These constraints are essential to test competing hypotheses using geodynamic models.

The broad aims of this multidisciplinary session encompass proposing testable geodynamic hypotheses, providing useful constraints from the geological record, or suggestions of how these data might be linked to corresponding mantle processes. We welcome contributions from all across the fields of geology and geophysics.
