Session Description:
Tropical mountainous systems have steep pathways that link hillslope watersheds to fragile aquatic environments, which often contain ecosystems that underpin the local economy and way of life. Anthropogenic land use, rapidly increasing due to rising population and development in tropical regions, enhances erosion and sediment and contaminant transport. Furthermore, tropical storm frequency and intensity is expected to increase in response to climate change. As a result, tropical systems and their connected aquatic environments are increasingly vulnerable. Yet a critical knowledge gap exists regarding the relationships between geomorphic and bathymetric conditions, processes that control sediment and contaminant transport and deposition, and ecologic tolerances of the mobilized sediment and contaminants. We encourage multidisciplinary integrated submissions from geomorphology, hydrology, ecology, coastal science, and geochemistry presenting new field data, experimental analyses, and/or theoretical modeling of sediment and contaminant transport and ecosystem impacts in the mountainous tropics.
