Linking the fluid and solid Earth: The role of terrestrial and submarine volcanism in the Plio-Pleistocene ice ages

Session Description:
Recent work suggests that seafloor and subaerial volcanism is more dynamic than previously thought, with activity linked to the waxing and waning of terrestrial icesheets on Milankovitch timescales. If true, the associated heat and carbon emissions could play an important role in the Plio-Pleistocene ice ages and triggering of glacial terminations. Here, we will discuss the drivers of volcanic activity, observations linking volcanic activity with ice sheet growth and decay, and the predicted influence of variable CO2 efflux on the ocean and atmosphere. This session is open to specialists in volcanology, geochemistry, and paleoceanography.
