Trace Elements on Mars and Earth: Where are the Biosignatures?

Session Description:
This session will focus on understanding how trace elements may provide clues about the presence and nature of life. On Earth and when biology is involved, trace elements are often found in chemical disequilibrium with their surroundings. Such terrestrial biosignatures may be applied to Mars as we begin the search for biosignatures in earnest with the Mars 2020 rover. It is of particular importance to pull apart signatures of abiotic from biotic processes in terrestrial data to determine what may be considered a key biosignature if observed on Mars. What potential biosignatures have been observed? What new studies, terrestrial analogs, and Mars observations are required to understand if these are biosignatures? Of particular interest are contributions synthesizing results from landed and remote sensing Mars missions, meteorites, terrestrial analogs, and laboratory studies.
