Transformations and Fate of Organic Gases and Particles in the Atmosphere

Session Description:
This session seeks to address the broad question: “Once emitted to the atmosphere, what happens to organic carbon and how is it eventually removed?” Reactive organic carbon enters the atmosphere primarily as a few dozen high-volatility gases, but oxidation of these compounds and subsequent partitioning of their products between phases yields a dynamic mixture of tens of thousands of compounds. These transformations have large consequences for air quality and climate, influencing ozone formation and the formation and growth of aerosol particles. However, difficulty characterizing this complex mixture has left major gaps in understanding its reactivity, chemical properties, and fate in the environment. Anticipated focus areas of this session include chemical transformations of emitted reactive carbon; characterization of the atmospheric organic carbon mixture; processes that govern partitioning between phases; and the removal of organic carbon from the atmosphere. Presented research will include results from field measurements, laboratory studies, and modeling.
