DI31A:
Multiscale Heterogeneity in Earths Deep Interior: Constraints from Imaging, Modeling, and Experiments I Posters

Submit an Abstract to this Session

Session ID#: 26365

Session Description:
Recent progress in seismology, geodynamics, geochemistry, and mineral physics provides insight into heterogeneity across spatial scales. Imaging techniques now model the full spectrum of seismic data, ranging from broadband seismic waveforms and normal modes, to arrival times of body and surface waves. These advancements provide constraints on parameters like attenuation, anisotropy, and density, illuminating the thermochemical nature of convective features. Regional techniques reveal small-scale features including potential remnants of subducted slabs and ultra-low velocity zones. The emerging consensus on large-scale mantle heterogeneity has led to cross-disciplinary efforts towards developing reference Earth models and data sets. The detected heterogeneity implies variation in intrinsic properties like temperature, composition, grain size, or crystal structure. Disaggregating these effects through observations, experiments, and modeling is vital for explaining the geological origins of seismic heterogeneities and for understanding mantle mixing processes. We invite submissions that explore the nature of heterogeneities at local, regional, and global scales.
