Beyond Rigid Plates: Investigating Mechanisms, Processes, and Products of Intraplate Deformation Posters

Session Description:
Over the past several decades our understanding of plate behavior has advanced beyond the classical conception of purely rigid plates deforming only along their margins. However, intraplate strain, deformation extending 100s to 1000s of kilometers inboard of active margins, is commonly recognized, but poorly understood. The Altai, Tien Shan, and Sierras Pameanas are prominent modern examples of intraplate deformation, whereas the Ancestral Rocky Mountains, Laramide, Petermann, and Alice Springs orogenies are ancient examples and some of the most enigmatic tectonic events in geologic history.

Comprehensive evaluation and characterization of this complex lithospheric behavior requires a broad understanding of surface response, lithosphere rheologic boundary conditions, and associated geodynamics. The processes, products, and driving mechanisms of intraplate deformation intimately link mantle-lithosphere interaction to surface processes. The goal of this session is to provide a platform wherefrom a diverse collection of earth scientists can present and collaborate across disciplinary boundaries.
