Session Description:
Subaqueous landslides are present in a wide variety of environments including marine and lacustrine, active and passive margins, on gentle and steep slopes, in soft and lithified sediments, and can remobilize sediment on scales ranging from a few m3 to thousands of Quantitative understanding of triggering mechanisms, landslide propagation as well as preconditioning factors that influence landslide timing is of fundamental importance for assessing sediment transport processes and possible geohazards. Unless directly monitored, relatively little is known about triggering mechanisms which include but are not limited to earthquakes, hydrate dissociation, pressure rebound behind headwalls, or influence of basement dynamics (e.g., diapirism). These processes are not mutually exclusive, and may have differing influence on landslide dynamics, frequency, and magnitude at any particular site. This session invites contributions highlighting the relationship between triggering mechanisms, timing, and mechanics of slide events as well as their influences on event frequency, nature, and magnitude.
