Coupled chemical and physical processes during fluid-rock interaction

Session Description:
During fluid/rock interactions geochemical reactions can change the physical and chemical characteristics of the matrix. Existing minerals can dissolve while new phases can form, affecting physical parameters such as porosity and permeability. Mineral reactions can also affect the mechanical properties of the rock by cementing grains or, alternatively, fracturing the porous matrix. Fluid transport along grain boundaries can lead to locally-targeted dissolution or precipitation that can dramatically influence rock cohesiveness, elastic properties and fracture toughness. Similarly, heterogeneities in physical rock properties can lead to non-linear phenomena such as fluid channeling and wormhole formation. All these processes can have profound impacts on a range of processes including diagenesis, weathering, geological carbon sequestration, enhanced oil recovery, and contaminant transport.

This session welcomes contributions that present state-of-the-art numerical simulations, laboratory experiments, and field studies focusing on the feedbacks and coupling between chemical and physical processes that take place during fluid-rock interaction.
