B021:
Crossing Redox Boundaries in Coastal Ecosystems: Consequences of Environmental Change

Session ID#: 26688

Session Description:
Coastal ecosystems, from salt marshes and estuaries to coral reefs and the continental shelf, are dynamic habitats where even subtle changes in water depth due to sea-level rise, salinity due to changing riverine inputs, or pollution caused by anthropogenic activities can shift redox conditions. Redox shifts can create biogeochemical feedbacks that impact a range of themes, from fisheries to tourism to greenhouse gas emissions. This session welcomes submissions that explore coastal redox biogeochemistry, including their causes, microbiological constituents, and potential or recognized consequences. Our goal is to highlight the redox complexity of coastal biogeochemical systems, many of which are already changing due to a multitude of stressors. Research using a range of geochemical, mineralogical, biogeochemical, microbiological, genomic, and modeling approaches is encouraged.  The session also invites contributions that consider the consequences of redox transformations to nutrient cycling, emissions, ecosystem function, plant and animal communities, and human populations in coastal regions.
