Lake-Atmosphere Interactions: Improving our Understanding with New Analysis, Data and Technology

Session Description:
Lakes modify regional weather and climate conditions and are a driver of climate variability and change. In recent decades, lakes have exhibited notable changes that will continue to impact people and the environment, such as increasing lake surface temperatures and summer evaporation rates, declining lake ice cover, and earlier lake stratification. The interconnectedness of physical feedbacks within lakes, and between lakes and the atmosphere, make it difficult to accurately predict future climate impacts. Using models to gather information about the future climate becomes even more challenging when those models do not include a realistic representation of the lakes, posing a challenge to practitioners who want reliable and credible regional climate information. This session will explore regional modeling efforts working to utilize state of the art models, monitoring systems, and data that more accurately represent the lake-land-atmosphere system to enable practitioners to better understand the uncertainty associated with future climate information.
