Indicators of Processes and Feedbacks Contributing to Arctic Change and Their Linkages to Global Change

Session Description:
Indicators of Arctic climate variability are reaching critical levels. Ocean properties are changing and sea ice mass and extent have declined alarmingly. Mass loss of the Greenland ice sheet has accelerated. These changes are partly forced by global-scale ocean/atmosphere changes and arguably Arctic changes affect global climate. However, significant gaps remain in understanding and model representation of critical processes and feedbacks within the Arctic system. As the Arctic and global climate change, indicators of the climate system variability as well as change are needed to advance our understanding of the underlying processes. This session will explore indicators of high-latitude changes and their relation to global climate with the aim of improving our understanding of processes and feedbacks that are key to variability and changes in the Arctic and linkages to global climate. The session will end with a panel discussion on science initiatives in U.S. CLIVAR, IARPC, and funding agencies.
