Session ID#: 26756
Session Description:
Within the last three decades, our understanding of continental extensional tectonics in the Basins and Ranges and Aegean Regions have improved substantially based on fieldwork, geochemical analysis, analog and computer modeling and detailed radiometric age determinations. However, there are still many important questions. These include determining a) the precise amount and percentage of cumulative extension; b) the role of strike-slip faulting in extensional processes; c) exhumation history along detachment surfaces; d) geometry of extensional features in the middle and lower crust; e) the nature of upper mantle and asthenospheric flow f) evolution of sedimentary basins associated with dip-slip and strike-slip faulting; and g) seismic hazards. This symposium will bring together researchers conducting research in several aspects of extensional tectonics in the Basins and Ranges and Aegean Regions. It will provide a formal discussion involving important questions and help researchers to design research methods to test them.
