Forecasting and early warning systems for water-related natural hazards: recent advances and outstanding challenges

Session Description:
Recent advances in meteorological, hydrological/hydraulic modelling, and data acquisition techniques are enabling the development of improved forecasting and early warning systems for water-related natural hazards. Nonetheless, there remain outstanding challenges in the validation of forecasts, communication of forecast uncertainty, deployment in data sparse situations, and in improving the capacity of decision makers and emergency responders to act on early warnings.

We encourage submissions pertaining to all aspects of forecasting and early warning systems for water-related natural hazards. Topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • System calibration and validation using novel data acquisition techniques (e.g remote sensing, wireless technologies and social media)
  • Novel modelling, analysis and visualisation techniques for forecasting hazards and impacts
  • Tools for communicating real-time warning information for decision making (e.g. dashboards, multi-layer maps, platforms and apps)
  • Novel techniques for characterizing and communicating forecast uncertainties to decision makers
  • Forecasting and early warning systems for ‘data sparse’ regions
