Creating inclusive and diverse field and lab environments within the Geosciences

Panel Format Session: This session has been selected by the Program Committee to be an official panel. Panelists will be invited authors designated by the conveners. Learn more

Session ID#: 26883

Session Description:
Geophysical sciences have a rich history of field- and lab-based observations that are fundamental to advancing Earth, Space and Planetary science.  Participation in field and lab activities should be open and safe for all scientists, yet many recent studies and news articles illuminate problems of harassment and intimidation in these settings. This session will present current research on diversity and inclusion specific to the geosciences and present best practices for improving, the sometimes entrenched, cultures surrounding field and lab environments.  An interactive panel discussion on solutions and recommendations will conclude this seesion.
Primary Convener:  Lora Koenig, National Snow and Ice Data Center, Boulder, CO, United States
Conveners:  Robin Elizabeth Bell, Lamont -Doherty Earth Observatory, Palisades, NY, United States, Meredith Galanter Hastings, Brown University, Institute at Brown for Environment and Society, Providence, RI, United States and Melissa A Burt, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO, United States

0855 Diversity [EDUCATION]
6630 Workforce [PUBLIC ISSUES]
9820 Techniques applicable in three or more fields [GENERAL OR MISCELLANEOUS]
