Session Description:
Experimental petrology and rock deformation are critical tools for the study of materials at pressure and temperature conditions relevant to planetary interiors.  Experiments provide fundamental information on the properties of materials from the macro to nanoscale, elucidating relationships between microstructures and rock/mineral properties. Today, experimental work plays much the same role that it did in the early twentieth century: it provides the foundation for interpreting and modeling geochemical and material behavior. Technological and theoretical advances have pushed the boundaries of precision, sample sizes, and material complexity, yielding novel insight into the evolution of Earth and other planetary interiors. This session features recent progress in experimental science, including both new and exciting results as well as innovative experimental techniques.   We especially seek contributions that combine analytic and theoretical techniques with traditional experimental petrology and rock deformation.  These interdisciplinary studies provide information on the mechanisms for material and elemental transport within planets.
