Linking dynamic hydrologic and biogeochemical processes in watershed systems

Session Description:
Watersheds are complex systems that consist of multiple subsystems linking together floodplains, hillslopes, meandering streams, oxbow lakes, and hyporheic zones. Each subsystem plays a specific role in determining river water quality and ecosystem functions. For predicting water quality and ecosystem functions, it is critical to understand various linkages and feedbacks throughout the aquatic continuum and surrounding landscapes. However, it is not well-known how these subsystems interact across multiple spatio-temporal scales and lead to a specific watershed response across the river network. We invite observational and theoretical contributions that advance understanding of aquatic, terrestrial, and atmospheric processes and their implications on watershed hydrological, biogeochemical, nutrient, and metal exports. Specific topics may include 1) biogeochemical linkages between riverine, estuarine and coastal ecosystems, 2) the influence of hydrology, geology, climate, vegetation dynamics on biogeochemical cycling, and 3) the impact of land and atmospheric fluxes, residence times, and biogeochemical transformation on river water quality.
