EP13B:
Sediment Transport Mechanics, Morphologic Expressions, and Depositional Patterns of Fine-Grained Dispersal Systems II Posters

Session ID#: 27017
Session Description:
Fine-grained sediment (mud and sand) dominates over many types of depositional settings, including fluvial-deltaic, coastal, shallow and deep marine, and subglacial regions, as well as for a variety of flow types, such as lahars and debris flows. The transport mode may involve bedload movement, but is likely dominated by suspension, which can form non-hyperconcentrated or hyperconcentrated flows. When entrained in the moving fluid, fine-grained sediment can damp turbulence, alter fluid rheology, and generate hindered or lubricated particle interactions. This interplay among fine sediment and fluid flow affects large-scale morphologic expressions and depositional patterns, which could be reflected in the stratigraphic record. This session seeks contributions from studies exploring the movement of fine-grained sediment on Earth and other planetary surfaces over a broad range of spatiotemporal scales, by investigating the physics of fluid-sediment motion and resulting depositional patterns. We welcome field- and laboratory-based studies, numerical modeling, and theoretical contributions.
