Understanding and Managing Ecological Drought in the Tropics

Session Description:
A warming climate and land-use change are intensifying drought regimes in the tropics, threatening biodiversity and provisioning of ecosystem services. Two important uncertainties constrain our ability to anticipate and manage ecological drought in the tropics. First, current and future changes to drought regimes remain poorly quantified. Second, how tropical ecosystems respond to varying drought conditions is largely unknown.  This session will focus on the influences of drought on tropical ecosystems and the associated management challenges.  Specifically, we seek studies that address the ecological significance of changing drought exposure (driven by climate and land-use changes), ecological drought impacts and thresholds across scales (individual, watershed, ecosystem), and adaptation strategies to reduce vulnerability to ecological drought (watershed restoration, invasive species abatement, wildfire planning, and reduced deforestation).  We especially welcome contributions on tropical systems typically underrepresented in drought studies (islands, dry forests, and non-forested habitats) and evidence for management strategies to minimize ecological drought.
