T43B:
Himalayan Earthquakes: Observations, Processes, and Tectonics Posters
Submit an Abstract to this Session
Session ID#: 27343
Session Description:
The Himalayan region is a tectonically active continental collision zone adjacent to numerous densely populated urban areas. Understanding the processes and tectonics of large Himalayan earthquakes is extremely important for estimating seismic hazards and organizing risk mitigation efforts. Earthquake rupture modeling, fault geometries and dynamics, lithospheric structure and rheologies, and the evolving state of regional stress all contribute to our understanding of the tectonic setting. We seek contributions from scientists who work on myriad aspects of Himalayan tectonics from the perspective of different disciplines including seismology, geodesy, geophysics, paleoseismology, structural geology, and geodynamics. We especially encourage submissions related to the recent 2015 large earthquakes in Nepal, the April 25, 2015 Gorkha magnitude 7.8 and the May 12, 2015 magnitude 7.3 earthquakes, the largest earthquakes to occur in the central segment of the Himalaya in 80 years.
