Limnology, paleolimnology, limnogeology – A celebration of lakes

Session Description:
Lacustrine deposits are becoming increasingly valuable as tools for paleoenvironmental analysis across space and time. Lakes that range from the deep, ultraoligotrophic ecosystems of Lake Tahoe and Crater Lake, to small lakes in the alpine reaches of the mountains, to the saline lakes in the Great Basin, Canada, Africa, and Antarctica, and hyperacidic volcanic lakes. The geological record of lacustrine deposits includes the well-known Green River and Florissant Formations, and lesser known isolated deposits of the Great Basin, to the Messel Shale. The depth and breadth of lacustrine studies is being continuously expanded as new analytical methods and proxies are added to the burgeoning paleolimnological toolkit. The purpose of this session is to provide a forum for limnogeologists interested in high-resolution records from Holocene sites to evaluations large-scale changes in lacustrine environments across millions of years.
