Wildfire Risks Under Climate Change in Coupled Human and Natural Systems Across Scales

Session Description:
More people have been moving into or near wildlands following extensive urban sprawl, significantly expanding the wildland-urban interface (WUI). Such an expansion of the WUI has increased human caused wildfires and associated losses. Under ongoing WUI expansion and global climate change, future wildfire risk is expected to increase in both frequency and severity. Wildfires in the WUI exert serious impacts in both natural and human dimensions, thereby impelling investigations of wildfires in coupled human and natural systems together with their impacts on ecosystems and socioeconomic conditions along and beyond the WUI. This interdisciplinary session will encompass topics on: links between wildfire risks and weather conditions and climate change trends; fire detection and fire risk monitoring; post-fire evaluation and ecosystem recovery; socioeconomic drivers related to fire behavior; fire impacts on human health, socioeconomic activities, and ecosystem services; and utilization of models to assess fire risks and severity for pro-active mitigation planning.
