Session Description:
Karst systems, which underlie 10-20% of the Earth’s landmass and supply water to nearly 25% of the world’s population, are changing due to human activities and climate change. These systems are highly dynamic and heterogeneous, with complex hydrological, geochemical, and biological processes that affect water and solute transport over a wide-range of spatio-temporal scales. Therefore, they are extremely difficult to characterize, model, remediate, and manage. A need exists to advance knowledge and technologies for understanding the hydrological response of karst systems and other preferential flow systems to environmental and climate change, and to develop appropriate management and remediation approaches. Interdisciplinary studies are highly demanded in the assessment of water resources availability and chemical dynamics in a karst aquifer. This session requests abstracts on research related to the characterization, monitoring and modeling of hydrogeology, morphology, biogeochemistry, geohazards and remediation of karst and other structurally variable water systems at multiple scales.
