Addressing Environmental Concerns of Hydraulic Fracturing Focusing on Water Quantity and Quality II Posters

Session Description:
Unconventional energy development using hydraulic fracturing to extract oil and gas from low-permeability shales, has played a critical role in enhancing national energy security. However, this development has been accompanied by environmental concerns, particularly impacts on water resources. This session will discuss and enhance understanding of water quantity and quality issues in unconventional energy development. We invite talks on a variety of topics, including, but not limited to, potential impacts of water withdrawal and source water identification, water reuse and alternative water sources, impact of produced water injection (seismicity), risk assessment and studies of groundwater contamination, such as origin (anthropogenic vs. natural) and sources of stray gas and brine migration, using both traditional (stable and radiogenic isotopes) and emerging (e.g., noble gases, clumped isotopes) analytical and modeling geochemical techniques. Presentations of case studies are welcome.
