Remote Sensing of the Cryosphere: ASO, Water Cycle Science, and High Resolution Retrievals

Session Description:
Recent drought and flood conditions in the western US have indicated the need for new approaches to modeling and measuring the seasonal snow cover. Airborne remote sensing can provide measurements of the cryosphere at spatial, temporal, and/or spectral resolutions than can resolve hydrologically relevant alpine snow heterogeneities. These types of data are not currently available from spaceborne platforms. Recent airborne science campaigns, such as ASO, have greatly increased the availability of high resolution cryospheric remote sensing data, and are pointing the way to future space missions and operational capacities. This session will focus on remote sensing of the cryosphere from both manned and unmanned aircraft platforms. Presentations will include the latest findings over a range of topics including instrument and platform development, analysis methods and techniques, and combining remote sensing retrievals with models to enhance scientific and operational applications. We welcome submissions from a diversity of sensor types and measurement methods (e.g. radar, lidar, imaging spectroscopy, photogrammetry) and cryospheric applications (e.g. snow, glaciers, sea ice, permafrost).
