Session Description:
Fluvial sediment transport and channel evolution is governed by coupling of fluid flow and underlying channel form, including planform morphology, riverbed structure, and floodplain architecture. Understanding interactions between fluvial sediment transport and channel form is important, as river morphology exerts a primary control on hydrodynamics, grain stability, and sediment flux. In turn, fluvial sediment transport drives the pace of channel evolution by providing the tools for bedrock incision, the building blocks for alluvial channels and their floodplains, and the basis for salmonid habitats and other ecosystem services. The linkage of channel patterns and their modern formative conditions can also allow for the recognition and interpretation of these processes and their resultant landforms/deposits in ancient geological settings. We welcome field, experimental, theoretical, and modeling efforts aimed at understanding, describing, or predicting the links between fluvial sediment transport processes and their relation to geomorphic signatures, ranging from the grain-scale to the channel-scale.
