Response of Earth Surface and Subsurface Processes to Rare, Extreme Events II Posters

Session Description:
Earthquakes, wildfire, typhoons, floods, and other catastrophic events can profoundly impact earth surface and subsurface processes, such as sediment transport, erosion, deposition, hydrology, and weathering. The rarity of these high-magnitude perturbations on human time-scales makes them difficult to study, yet such events may be important to earth surface processes over geological time-scales. At the scale of a mountain range, the temporal and spatial clustering of these events lead to transient landscape dynamics that could overprint signals of long-term landscape evolution. For example, increases in erosion following severe, infrequent wildfires may account for the majority of long-term denudation in certain settings. This session seeks to bring together researchers studying the impact of extreme events on earth surface processes over a range of temporal and spatial scales: from those studying contemporary processes by which extreme events affect landscapes and create hazards to those that focus on impacts over geological time.
