Initial Results from the Oman Drilling Project - Late Breaking Session: Deadline 25 September

Session Description:
After several years of preparation, the Oman Drilling Project began drilling in late December 2016, and continued through the end of March 2017. As planned, we obtained 1500 meters of core from four boreholes in the oceanic crust and upper mantle of the Samail ophiolite, with 100% recovery. Three were in the lower oceanic crust (GT1: lower gabbros; GT2: foliated gabbros; GT3: dike-gabbro transition), with one through the basal thrust, beginning in listvenite (100% carbonated peridotite) interlayered with partially serpentinized peridotite), passing through the fault zone, and ending in fine-grained mafic volcanics and sediments of the metamorphic sole. Two rotary holes were drilled in altered peridotite from the mantle section. Geophysical logging was conducted in all six holes. Core description onboard the Drilling Vessel Chikyu, in port in Shimizu, Japan, started July 15, and ends September 15. This session will provide an opportunity to present initial results from drilling, biogeoscience, geophysical logging, and core analysis. In turn, the session will provide scientists a preview of research opportunities available to volunteers over the coming year, as we drill another 2 km of core, and continue water sampling, logging and core observations.
