Challenges and Opportunities Associated with Autonomous Sensing Systems Posters

Session Description:
Autonomous sensing systems are now capable of gathering data for earth and space science and are the focus of research in many different domains. The systems being used and produced range from autonomous vehicles (particularly Unmanned Aircraft systems -UAS) to sensor network systems. The science applications are maturing, from simply testing platform capabilities to more complex data collection and research. With this shift, data and information challenges abound. . Calibration and validation of sensor data is critical for achieving meaningful science goals. Integration of data from a variety of instruments on one between sensor systems (e.g. satellite, ground based, other UAS) presents cutting-edge opportunities to fill gaps in geospatial monitoring. Yet there remain significant data and information challenges in these areas. This session will cover the state of the art in the use of autonomous sensing systems to study many aspects of earth and space including: current data and information challenges in the use of sensor systems, work demonstrating techniques and tools for sensor system data management, integration, interoperability and sharing, and research showcasing best practices.
