Preserving Scientific Integrity and Science-Based Governance in the New Political Era

Session Description:
The federal government has made great strides in advancing scientific integrity in recent years. The development of scientific integrity policies, placement of agency scientific integrity officers, and strengthening of whistleblower protections have served to bolster the safeguards in place to protect government science and scientists. Yet, these protections are now being tested like never before. With an administration and Congress that have shown disrespect for science-based policymaking at the federal level, scientists working within the federal government and the scientific community at large stand to face significant impacts on their work. What are the current risks and what kinds of protections or enforcement is now needed? What can the scientific community do to support scientists and to preserve scientific integrity in policymaking? This session will include scientists and decisionmakers who will survey the current state of play, issue to watch, and what steps the scientific community is taking in response.
