Frontiers of Solar Wind Physics: Collisions and Velocity Space Posters

Session Description:
Particle distribution functions in space plasmas often exhibit kinetic
structures including temperature anisotropies, drifts, and general nonthermal structure, indicating that the plasma is
weakly collisional. However, studies of solar wind collisional age
have revealed that particle collisions affect the evolution of
plasma as it expands through the heliosphere, indicating that a
complete description of the solar wind must account for
macrophysical expansion effects, microphysical collisionless
processes, and Coulomb collisions.
This session focuses on innovative diagnostic techniques,
analysis methods, and modeling efforts that utilize information from nonthermal
velocity-space structure, including field-particle correlations and
Hermite transformations, which may identify the collisionless processes that govern
plasma heating and particle energization in the solar wind. This
session also addresses how the combined actions of expansion,
collective plasma processes, and collisional relaxation determine the
state of the solar wind. Investigations that exploit particle velocity distribution function
measurements in weakly collisional plasmas are solicited, as are works
that will stimulate an interdisciplinary discussion of global and
local plasma effects in the solar wind.
