OS53B:
Naturally Occurring Gas Hydrates IV Posters

Submit an Abstract to this Session

Session ID#: 31065

Session Description:
Naturally occurring methane (and occasionally, carbon dioxide and higher hydrocarbon) hydrate forms at some of the most intriguing, dynamic, and remote locations on our planet. Evidence of gas hydrate continues to be found on the continental slopes of the world’s ocean margins in areas of focused flow; e.g., cold seeps, and extensive, pore-filling, sub-seafloor reservoirs. Fluid flux, lithology, permeability, heat flux, and gas concentration play key roles in the emplacement of gas hydrate, but these factors remain insufficiently understood. Geophysical studies, borehole data and core analysis, laboratory studies, and numerical modelling have all contributed to our growing understanding of the dynamics of naturally occurring gas hydrate systems. Nonetheless, considerable uncertainty remains regarding the quantification of gas hydrate accumulations and associated fluid flow, as well as the specific factors controlling gas hydrate occurrence and saturation.
For this session, we encourage contributions presenting the results of theoretical, laboratory or field data analyses.
