Spatial and Temporal Variability of Dust Emissions and Transport: Importance of High-Latitude Sources and Insights from Paleodust Archives II Posters

Session Description:
Mineral dust is a major component of the global aerosol load. Dust emissions are influenced by climate change, and dust, in turn, affects climate and biogeochemical cycles. Dust is an uncertain component of the climate system, because of the spatial and temporal variability of dust emissions and transport, as well as particle size distributions and size-dependent physical and chemical properties. Natural archives potentially allow for quantitative reconstructions of the global dust cycle, especially when measurements of mass accumulation rates are paired with particle size distributions. Dust delivered to the high latitudes is of particular interest because of its role in the oceans' biogeochemical cycles, hence the interest to understanding its provenance and transport. We invite contributions aimed at building up a quantitative observational reference framework from paleodust archives globally, and elucidating the dynamics and impacts of the dust cycle at high latitudes, from both the observational and modeling communities.
