Applications of Thermochronology to Understand Crustal Systems

Session Description:
Understanding the timing and/or rates of geologic events is often necessary to link them to mantle, lithospheric, and surface processes and assess the role of tectonics, erosion, and climate. Thermochronology is a powerful and increasingly used tool for deciphering crustal thermal histories that bear on a range of geologic questions. Such questions include, but are not limited to, cratonic stability, orogenic exhumation rates, timing of faulting, basin evolution, and magmatic events. Current research is pushing the limits of these dating techniques to assess deep-time thermal histories and decipher long-term thermal evolution. While substantial methodological advances have been made to improve our understanding of these complicated dating tools, interpreting complex datasets poses a significant challenge. We invite contributions that utilize thermochronometric dating techniques to better understand complex crustal systems. Contributions that relate to advances and innovative applications of thermochronometry are encouraged.
