Emerging Technologies in Hydrologic Remote Sensing: Drones, Proximal Sensing Using Cosmic Ray Neutron Probes, and More III Posters

Session Description:
In recent decades, hydrologic remote sensing data has mostly been acquired from large satellites sponsored by large governmental organizations. While tremendously beneficial, these data sources are expensive to develop and generally limited in number. Further, orbital considerations often impose a tradeoff between temporal and spatial resolution. Several emerging technologies have recently matured to the point of viability for hydrologic research - providing high-resolution, high-fidelity data at dramatically lower cost. Technologies using remote platforms include unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), Cubesats, and signals of opportunity (e.g crowd-sourced data or GNSS-R). Additionally, the cosmic-ray neutron probes provide a low-cost, proximal sensing platform at hectometer scale that can be fixed or roving and now includes a large existing network. This session brings together studies that demonstrate the development, validation or use of these emerging technologies for observations of the critical zone and other components of the hydrologic cycle.
