Glacial Isostasy, Sea Level, and Earth System Evolution I

Session Description:
Recent analyses of Ice-Earth-Ocean processes by space geodetic measurements (e.g. GPS, GRACE, and satellite altimetry) has led to a new class of glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) models. Such space geodetic measurements are dramatically enhancing and complementing the more traditional measurements of GIA provided by tide gauge and geological relative sea-level records. The new GIA models better constrain the space and time dependent variation of continental ice cover during the most recent 100,000 year cycle of the Late Quaternary ice-age; and the depth dependence of the effective viscosity of Earth’s mantle, as well as its lateral heterogeneity. We invite contributions that are focused upon: (1) the development and further improvement of GIA models using instrumental and geological measurements; (2) inferences concerning Earth’s interior visco-elastic structure; and (3) the variations of continental ice cover that have occurred on the surface in response to climate system processes.
