Advances in Coupled Human-Natural Systems Modeling for Water and Land Resources Management II Posters

Session Description:
Human development depends on ecosystem services from freshwater and land resources, which are increasingly stressed by anthropogenic activities including food and energy production, urbanization, and environmental pollution. Yet, management of these resources is not always informed by discovery-based science, and new scientific understanding does not always get translated into applied settings. This session explores gaps and successful linkages between the need to make near-term management decisions and the understanding of the basic science needed to implement sustainable solutions. Of particular interest are case studies that elucidate the complex interactions of human-natural systems, and their integration through coupled models capable of representing human decisions (e.g., economic, cultural, social) and natural subsystems (e.g., hydrologic, ecologic, climatic). Topics include feedbacks, spatiotemporal dependencies, legacy effects and time lags, field-based studies, predictive scenario assessment, and holistic cost-benefit analysis of water and land management practices.
