From the Lithosphere to the Delta: Academic and Industry Geophysical Data to Address Scientific and Societal Issues Across the U.S. Gulf Coast and Beyond

Session Description:
The U.S. Gulf Coast lithosphere is shaped by two rifting episodes (~530 and 220-165 Ma) and ~310 Ma continental collision. Evidence of these events is buried beneath thick sediments and salt, both onshore and offshore but forms the basis to understand both the tectonic evolution and modern processes in the coastal zone. Populated and industrialized coastal zones are especially subject to changes in groundwater quality and availability, agricultural soil conditions attending relative sea-level rise. Industry data, including 3-D seismic, can help integrate our understanding of subsurface and the near-surface conditions and improve overall coastal resilience. This session includes a broad spectrum of contributions from academic and industry geoscientists that help understand the structure and evolution of the buried lithosphere of this region and highlight ways in which academic and industry collaborations can address issues with significant societal impact.
