B41D:
Organo-Mineral-Microbe Interactions in Terrestrial and Aquatic Ecosystems II Posters
Submit an Abstract to this Session
Session ID#: 31571
Session Description:
Interactions between organic matter, minerals, and microbes influence transformations, dynamics, and bioavailability of organic carbon, nutrients, and trace metals in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Minerals not only affect the stability of soil organic matter, but also support microbial and plant growth by providing essential nutrients. Additionally, the formation and fate of organometallic complexes can be an important driver of nutrient cycles under nutrient limiting conditions, yet these complexes are only rarely considered in terrestrial ecosystems. This session will include: 1) Experimental work that elucidates biogeochemical pathways and reaction mechanisms that govern nutrient cycling in a variety of terrestrial and aquatic environments; 2) Investigations of organic molecules transformations at the organo-mineral interfaces; 3) Ecological impacts of microbial activities and responses during the interaction with minerals and organic matter, including organometallic complexes; and 4) Multi-scale modeling to integrate organic matter distribution, microbial community, mineral composition, and redox dynamics in biogeochemical processes.
