Growth of the Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau: Timing, Geodynamic Drivers, and Climatic Effects
Session ID#: 31606
Session Description:
The spatiotemporal pattern of surface uplift and exhumation of the Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau are fundamental to understanding the geodynamic drivers for building high plateaus, and Cenozoic changes in Asian climate, global ocean chemistry and atmospheric pCO2. Numerical simulations, based on boundary conditions like magnitude and size of surface uplift, can make predictions regarding the influence of topography on climatic parameters, which in turn assist proxy-based paleoelevation reconstruction. This session aims to bridge gaps between field geology, paleoclimatology, and numerical simulations by inviting contributions from several sub-disciplines associated with geology of the Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau, including but not limited to: timing and pattern for topographic growth and exhumation of the Plateau; paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental changes in the Plateau and surrounding regions, such as aridification and monsoonal climate; and numerical simulations of geodynamic processes, paleoclimate and meteoric water stable isotopes.
